IV. Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead-in Review the main idea of the article and complete the passage with the correct forms of the words and phrases in the box below. T: Hello, everyone, nice to meet you! We’ve learned an article on the website. Today we shall review the text, discuss how to use some words and phrases, and practice using them in different situations. T: Would you fill in the blanks using the given words 【设计意图:回归课本,回忆文章。通过篇章结构的理解引领学生到词汇上面来。】 Step 2 Building vocabulary 1. Word study: compete (1) Introduce the meanings of compete in different contexts. T: Every day in daily life, we need to defeat others to get something we want. That is to say, we compete with others to get a gift. They competed in such events as boxing, running and the long jump. (para. 2) Compete has two meanings: · to try to be more successful or better than somebody else who is trying to do the same as you · to take part in a contest or game T: Here are two examples for you. · I am hoping to compete in the marathon. · Amy and her sister are always competing for attention. What’s the meaning of compete in each sentence 2) Collocations of compete T: This word, compete, could be collocated with several prepositions, including with, against, for and in. Do you know the meaning of each collocation Here are three examples: · The boy often competes with his classmates. · The boy competed in the marathon three years ago. · The boy tries his best to compete for the first prize. T: After grasping the meaning of each collocation, here comes another sentence.
