B I first visited China when the country began to open up to westerners, and I spent a long time exploring Yunnan back then, so being invited back after so many years feels like a wonderful chance to see just how much has changed here. This visit is nicely unhurried, allowing me to explore on my own as well as with other journalists (记者). Often, press (新闻媒体) trips are so rushed that you hardly see anything — but this time, I feel we’re really getting to experience each place deeply. Yunnan has changed a lot — far more than I could have ever imagined. Dali and Lijiang, once sleepy little towns without a visitor in sight, are now famous tourist attractions. Back then, both Dali and Lijiang were where people lived and worked. Now, they’re full of tourist shops and hotels. In the past, locals in bright traditional clothes would come into town to shop, shyly turning away from cameras. Now, people rent those same clothes for photos. The changes are also positive. Food in those days was fairly limited, but now there’s a wide variety. I relish the street food, especially unusual things like crickets (蟋蟀), and also the food in the restaurants, which is equally excellent. Another positive is making local friends who are happy to discuss every part of the country and its culture. My guide, Tammy, is outstanding — she goes out of her way to feed my curiosity. At one point, she even knocked on doors in the backstreets of a village, so I could meet local families and get a look at their lifestyle.
